11 Days Later: YYC Film Project Needs Your Support

All films start with a great story. It takes someone with that rare cinematic eye to
take a great story and make it extraordinary. Local filmmaker, Brett Ferster sees a
story that way. He also sees opportunity to create something as a collective, which
is why with his forthcoming film short, ‘Dryland’, he has developed a campaign on
Kickstart (www.kickstarter.com) to help fund this new project.

‘Dryland’ takes us back to the dusty hardworn days of prohibition. A story loosely
based on Ferster’s own grandfather’s touch with fate during the era of moonshine
and the mob, ‘Dryland’ tells the story of a family struggling to survive during this
tumultuous time. One day their daughter Jolene follows her father to one of his
dealings and she ends up caught in a labyrinth of danger and confusion. The film
exposes her world as she is tossed between childhood naivety and adult liabilities.

Ferster, the director of the film is giving Calgarians a unique offer – to actively
support and contribute in the making of this film set to be shot in Calgary.

“’Crowd-funding’ is the process by which the public at large becomes involved by
contributing financially to a cause or project. In this case, Kickstarter allows people
to become ‘backers’ of a project and actively participate in the filmmaking process,”
affirms the ambitious auteur. “The level of participation for Calgarians on the film is
in proportion to the amount of backing they give to the film.”

For each sponsorship level, financial backers receive benefits such as a private
dinner with the filmmakers or an original photo book documenting every step of
the filmmaking process. There is a catch, however: the filmmakers only have 28
more days to complete the fundraising mission. If the film doesn’t reach the $15,
000 goal by April 11 at 1:00AM, the backer’s transactions aren’t processed and
the filmmakers lose the money. Ferster hopes that the stimulating opportunity to
participate and support the making of a local film will inspire Calgary film-lovers to
help the ‘Dryland’ crew reach their goal.

Tonite: 99 Problems But A Stitch Ain’t One

Just when you thought that there was nothing ironic left in the world, local artist
and ACAD Drawing Major, Davey Gravy debuts his new collection of work, 99
Problems But A Stitch Ain’t One. Combining his love of African-American music
and traditional homespun craftwork, Gravy produced a series of work the unites the
world of hip hop and rap with “cozy grandma” culture. Gravy’s kitsch sensibilities
allow his work and message to translate seamlessly: “I’ve taken a traditional craft
technique and reinvented it with hip hop imagery, birthing juxtapositions such as
young vs. old, African-American vs. Caucasian, art vs. craft, rich vs. poor, etc.”

Each piece expressed through cross-stitch and embroidery was a technique that
Gravy refined over his final year of his drawing degree. “I never imagined that
I would be picking up a needle and thread to spend 15-30 hours working on a
small ‘drawing’. I discovered I took pleasure in the time and process that went into
creating such a tiny piece of work.”

99 Problems opens Thursday March 31st at 7pm at The Gallery (113 – 1013 17th
Ave SW). The show runs until the end of April, but don’t miss this chance to chat
with Gravy about his favourite rap albums and latest series of work.

One of my bestest pals, Nicoleirene Dyck of Words Are Cameras is going to be setting up a gangsta grandma photobooth which can’t be missed!  Best profile pics ever!

weekend with friends

weekends with great friends are the best times spent.  we ventured out to trail, bc for a self-imposed long weekend and had a lovely relaxing time with our favourite family: the millers.  reasons why this weekend was so lovely:

  • road trips with mr honey are the best road trips ever.  we load up the car with cameras & instruments, tasty coffees and treats and hit the road!
  • nachos and keno
  • pina coladas, house-made and from the pub are best served with rainbow sprinkles and enjoyed with friends
  • cannelloni is like giant macaroni that you stuff with yummy things like ricotta, mushroom, swiss chard, purple onion and spinach. douse in tomato alfredo.
  • the autoharp is my new favourite instrument.  though i think mandolin is something im ready to learn.
  • record shopping is the best kind of shopping you can do on a rainy day.
  • greek fries & rock creek cider are the best kind of things to ingest on a rainy day.
  • little girls with pretty curls are basically the best kind of people to have around, especially when you want to talk about hello kitty.
  • brunch should be the new church.  lets all meet every sunday and eat copious amounts of poached eggs, hashbrowns and fruit salad.  and pink champagne mimosas.  and endless coffee.
  • avalanches are best viewed from a distance
  • creme eggs and mini eggs: thank goodness there is another woman out there who cares as much about these poor eggs as i do.
  • warm sunny weather will always make your day better, whereas cold blizzard weather will make you want to turn around and go back to your friends’ mint green abode and eat cannelloni and hang out with kids for a week. too bad you cant!
  • #winning at road trip bingo
  • finger pianos & banjo.

wednesday wishlist

The minute spring peeks its head around our half of the hemisphere I immediately feel a need for change.  Let’s move the furniture around, change the pillows on the couch, and buy new stuff.  Here is my current wishlist for the spring.  So many lovely things and one hilarious not-so-nice bag.   :)

This BBQ from Crate & Barrel was on our wedding registry and obviously no one bought it for us, so maybe this spring we should purchase it ourselves!

This amazing armchair would look gorgeous in our bedroom.  I wonder if Byron and I could DIY a similar incarnation.

These wallpaper samples from Hygge & West are heavenly and beg to be used in my office space.

Sometimes I feel like I would need a bag like this hanging by the front door.  Except I probably wouldn’t go grocery shopping; I’d fill it with books and dresses and gluten-free pizzas.

spring!

It sure feels like spring right now.  Could it be too good to be true?  When I was walking to work this morning it was so warm and breezy I felt like finding a spot of grass to sit and watch the clouds float by.  Okay, perhaps there isn’t a dry (or uncovered) spot of grass to sit on at the moment, but I was getting that feeling for sure.  It is bizarre how lost I got during these winter months — I think I was honestly hibernating.  These past couple of days of “spring” have made me feel so excited and inspired about getting outside and being active.  Riding bikes, long nite walks through winding streets, even going to the gym is going to be easier when it’s warm out.  Let’s hope it sticks around.

Milkshakes with Mr Honey.

Colour.  I am sick of wearing black.  Let’s bring out the spring & summer colours!

Let’s canoe!

Bikes with dresses!

Cloud dreaming.

Picnics in the park! xo

the perfect burger

The other day I figured out how to make the most perfect burger.  I am not really one to crave “junk food” of this sort.  I am definitely a french fry kinda girl and I can’t say no to a chocolate milk shake.  Maybe it is because being Celiac you can’t actually order a normal burger at a restaurant or fastfood joint, you’ve got to eat yours with a fork and knife without the bun.  Burger please, hold the bun.  And yes, I would like all the regular condiments and toppings.

Anyways, Byron and I had this craving for burgers so I decided to concoct my OWN healthy gluten-free version of the sort and I came with the Perfect Burger.

Buns:  O’Doughs GF Flax Poppy Seed Buns

Patties:  Lean Ground Turkey mixed with Crumbled Feta and Oregano

Toppings:  Sauteed Onions & Mushrooms, thick tomato slices, Dijon, Mayo, and Ketchup.  Avocado is also an amazing addition.

Combine all and enjoy the most epic burger you will ever have.  Slice up some potatoes and shake them in some cayenne and a little bit of oil, bake in the oven on high  for the perfect spicy homefries.

Far-Out Key Lime Marmalade

I came across bags & bags of beautiful key limes at the market recently and decided I had to make something amazing with them.  I considered a key lime pie but decided that sentiment would be short-lived and started searching for something more sustainable until I found several marmalade recipes.  I took bits and pieces from various recipes until I created something I was happy with.  If you are adventurous in your jams, you will have to try this Far-Out Key Lime Marmalade next time.  Definitely for the person who loves their marmalades, this one is a little bitter (expected from a lime!) and a little bit sweet.  Try it on hot buttered toast or heat it up and drip it on some vanilla bean ice cream.  Delish.  The recipe:

4 cups of chopped key limes

4 cups of water

4 cups of sugar

Place the chopped limes and juice in a large bowl.  Fill the bowl with water to just cover the limes.  Cover with plastic wrap and let sit for at least four hours.  I left mine overnight which gave my kitchen a citrus fresh scent when I awoke the next day.  Transfer everything to a non-stick reactive pot.  Eyeball the amount of liquid now in the pot and add an equal amount of water.  Start adding sugar, but just a little bit to start.  Use your judgement, I believe in you.   You will want to simmer the mixture now over medium temperature until it reaches it’s jelling point (when it starts to get all sticky and drips off the spoon slowly in globs).   Transfer to sterilized jars and fill to within 1/2″ of the top.  Process in a basic water bath canning system for 10 minutes.  Let sit for 24 hours and then enjoy. I prefer my marmalade cold so stick one jar in the fridge for immediate use. xo

Butterscotch Butter Cream Cupcakes

Cupcakes.  I realized sometime last week that I was craving cupcakes.  An odd thing to crave in this day and age; the age of other delectable treats such as complex macarons, handcrafted marshmallows, and attempts at gluten-free puff pastries.  They just kept popping up in my head all soft and spongey with their swirly bits of icing taunting me.  I actually haven’t made cupcakes since the night before  my wedding when on my own I baked, iced, and decorated 100 mini cupcakes for my wedding guests.  It was a very calming and therapeutic to ice each one of those precious little cupcakes.

Perhaps, that is why I decided to make some cupcakes today.  I needed some cupcake therapy.  For me, its not even about eating them really.  I just love to make them and have a beautiful product to ogle afterwards.  Anyways, I think it worked.

My migraine kinda went away as I made these Ultra Deluxe Butterscotch-filled Vanilla Cupcakes with Butterscotch Buttercream Icing with Sparkling Pink Himalayan Salt dusted over them.  I could feel the stress melt away as I used an apple-corer tool to remove the centers of each cupcakes and filled them up again with butterscotch pudding.  I started thinking clearer about all of the projects on my to-do list this weekend as I whipped up the buttercream in my Kitchenaid mixer.  Yes, cupcakes do wonders.
