Fun Dip: Easy Kitchen Decor DIY

Dipped objects are setting a trend in home design, fashion, and everyday objects. Usually, the dipped colour contrast is between a neutral shade spiked with a soft pastel or trendy neon. You can “dip” just about anything you want. I started with chopsticks, some wooden spoons, a cheese board, and some vintage cutlery. I also played around with dipped glass jars.  I can’t wait to try the dipped trend on some furniture or with fabric on a cute sundress.

Supplies:

Objects to be dipped

Acrylic craft paints or spray paint

Foam Brushes

Paint tray

Painters Tape

Step one: Using the painters tape mark off the area on your utensils that you want to have the “dipped effect” on them. If you are using spray paint you will need to mask off the entire area of the utensil that is not being painted for health and safety reasons (especially for chopsticks, utensils, cutlery).

Step two: Spray or brush paint on. You may have to do 2-3 coats depending on the consistency of your paint. The goal is to have a very solid coat to look as if it has actually been dipped in the paint.  Let dry for one hour.

Step three: Remove painters tape after the drying period is complete.  I like to give them all a quick wipe down with a damp cloth. Please note, these items must be washed by hand with care. Please do not place in dishwasher.

what i’m looking at

Planning to go see Andrew Bird: Fever Year here in Calgary at The Plaza Theatre, April 4th. A bit about the film: FEVER YEAR is the first to capture Bird’s precarious multi-instrumental looping technique and features live performances at Milwaukee’s Pabst Theater with collaborators Martin Dosh, Jeremy Ylvisaker, Michael Lewis and Annie Clark of St. Vincent.

The lovely Alyssa Yuhas is featured over at Eva Black Design, sharing her inspiring workspace. BIG NEWS! Alyssa is going to be doing a beautiful redesign on ye olde Yuppie Love this spring and I absolutely can’t wait to see our ideas come together!

I finally got to attend one of local food writer John Gilchrist’s lunches. I wrote about it over here.

Loving this simple graphic triangle pillow DIY over at House of Earnest. Simplistic perfection at its best. I’ve got some fun pillow DIYs coming out of the woodwork for Swerve in the near future! Exciting!

Calgary Underground Film Festival is launching their line-up and program tomorrow! I am attending the media launch and I can’t wait to share some of the fabulous films that this year will be showcasing.

Hope you are having a lovely week! I am looking forward to the weekend full of friends and family. What are your plans for the weekend? x

spring fever

Okay, so I only have Spring Fever mentally but I am so ready to put away the boots and coats. I got food poisoning this weekend and I am still trying to recover from the awfulness of it. This weekend was incredibly beautiful but alas I was in bed for the whole darn thing.

Replenishing your fluids is a must for the tummy aches. I found this amazing recipe for Cherry Club Soda over at Small Things Great Love. Original image by Baileigh Johnson.

will you be my pal #3 recap

Making new friends has got to be one of the best feelings ever. And there is no more a perfect way to bond than over a waffle bar full of delicious toppings. That is exactly what I did this past Friday evening at the third edition of Will You Be My Pal?. The lovely Rachele Doyon () hosted the soiree at her pad and we had the perfect group of creative women chatting over waffles and the crackling of the tv fireplace.

It was so great to hang out with everyone but especially cool to meet some ladies that hadn’t been able to attend a party yet but I had been chatting to on twitter for awhile. One of those ladies, freelance writer Annalise Klingbeil () has an identical twin sister in the same profession, Cailynn who actually wrote about the WYBMP parties in her recent article entitled Slow Networking. We hope to get Cailynn down to Calgary soon for a party! Super great to meet Cate Hydeman () too – you just can’t go wrong with a girl named Cate. She is a super inspiring bicycling lady with loads of romantic stories about her and her husband. Loved it!

I am planning on wrapping up the series of Will You Be My Pal? this May with the final party at my house (to bring it full circle of course!) and I can’t wait to share with everyone the theme!
