HOME SWEET GNOME + GIVEAWAY

IMG_8325

It’s that time of year again! With warmer weather (hopefully) approaching, it is time to start making your to-do list for fixing up the house and gathering inspiration for your summer 2014 garden. The Calgary Home + Garden Show is coming up at the end of the month from February 27 – March 2. It is the most trusted resource for every home improvement project, inside and out. With big names like HGTV’s Bryan BaeulmerTommy Smythe and other top authorities, plus more than 650 exhibitors and a slew of new, exciting features, there’s real advice, real inspiration and real experts at every turn.

I was so excited when they asked me to be a part of their Better Gnomes and Gardens feature. Local bloggers including myself took on the challenge of painting a gnome for an awesome charity auction happening at the Home Show. All proceeds from the sale of the gnomes are going to support Grow Calgary, a very worthy, local charity and Canada’s largest urban agricultural farm that produces food for the Interfaith food bank to ensure that all Calgarians’ have access to healthy local food. This is my little gnome, inspired by the late great Mary Blair, a designer and artist for Disney during the 1940s-70s. I just love him – he is so cute!

I hope you’ll make it down to the show to check out the gnomes as well as all of the amazing exhibitors and booths! Scroll down for your chance to win tickets to the show!

How to Create Your Own Salon Style Art Wall

Every time I venture out to another indie market, vintage store or art show, I somehow come home with an armload of prints, interesting objects – and my favourite, old signage. Figuring out what to do with all of these mix and match pieces is another story.

post1_kaitkucy_1

One of my favourite ways to display my varied collections is to create a salon style gallery wall in my home.  Salon style galleries date back to the 1700s in Paris – notably at Salon de Paris they would display up to 400 works of art, all hung in a Tetris-like patter on the wall. At the time, the style in which the paintings were hung was due to a matter of space, however the un-inhibited look caught on and now you see it everywhere from arts museums to hipster lofts in Brooklyn.

Salon style allows you to have more freedom while hanging the art – gone are the restrictions of grids or straight lines. You can really play with each piece and try it in a couple of different places before you finalize the wall.

post1_kaitkucy_3

My favourite part of starting a new gallery wall is gathering all of the pieces that will make up my collection. Pull together pieces that have similar colour palettes or subject matter, bold architectural details or organic elements like antlers or branches. I start off by laying everything out on the floor and playing around with the arrangements – you’ll thank yourself later if you can somewhat finalize your layout before you start putting holes in the wall. When designing a gallery wall, I like to work inwards out. Starting at the ‘heart’ of my gallery I wall I build outwards; first hanging the biggest pieces in the middle and adding surrounding pieces after.

post1_kaitkucy_4

Just remember, as you create inspiring gallery walls in your home – there are no rules. Play with it and make it fun and beautiful. And never forget that you can start from scratch with a pot of wall filler.

TAKING ANNIE WILLIAMS HOME…

AW1

I’m in the mood for cozy. Big thick woolen blankets, soft yet firm cushions and a rug to sink my feet into. Everything you need to hole up and hibernate for a whole winter. My talented photographer friend, Nicoleirene recently shot the look book for the AW + Josi Faye HOME Collection. I’ve been a long time fan of Annie Williams‘ beautiful clutches and totes – stunning raw leather paired with giant knits. I even just heard about a new collection of bags sewn up with real gold thread. I just about fell over.

A collaboration with Han Starnes of Josi Faye – they came together in the most beautiful way. The home line is bold and cozy. I love the oversized knits and the soft cream palette. From the bed roll to the rug to the pillow – I’m in love. And luckily, you don’t have to live in Williams’ hometown of Nashville to get your hands on some of these goodies – they are in the AW shop!

A POST-FLOOD GARDEN

1151039_10153153048080103_10246841_n

It is quite amazing that despite a devastating flood, the Mission gardens continued to grow. This is what a garden looks like when you haven’t tended to it for two months. Piled high with silt left by the flood, magically the lettuce, sweet peas, sunflowers and zucchinis continued to grow. We spent a whole afternoon digging away at the silt trying to reach real soil again – it was backbreaking work – that silt is like concrete when it is dry. I am amazed anything survived at all. We managed to harvest some cherry tomatoes, a yellow zucchini, a couple small carrots and a bunch of sweat pea blooms.

It was really disappointing however to see how much didn’t grow especially after we had spent so much time carefully planting each row and tending to it every couple of nights. That was before the flood though and you just can’t fight nature. We’ve got to go back this weekend and clean it up before the snow comes. Those sunflowers will be the most work – we need to chop them down into little bits so that they compost easily. They are practically trees. Turns out they can grow in just about any kind of condition. I’m impressed.

I hope that next summer we can count on a full harvest without any floods but of course, we can’t predict anything at all. Though I am pretty sure there will always be an abundance of rhubarb in the garden no matter what happens. I love the snapshot below of the head gardener Georgina holding the biggest rhubarb leaf I have ever seen in my life. I guess all of the “nutrients” (ie. waste) in the silt really helped it reach gigantic proportions. Rhubarb pie for days, folks…

A Spring Clean

Stocksy_txp3c59dc04L00000_Small_2828

I’ve already been getting a head start on my spring cleaning this year. It has been liberating, to say the least. I have been tackling room by room and discovering exactly what stuff should absolutely stick around and which should hit the road. It is slightly terrifying when you realize that you have been toting some stuff around for nearly a decade – things that have really no sentimental value, whatsoever. Regardless of what I may be getting rid of, my biggest goal this spring is to work on compartmentalizing the stuff that is going to be sticking around after the charity bin runs.

Making sure everything you keep around has a dedicated space is so important. If you find yourself stuck trying to find a spot to keep an item, you should either rethink your organizing system or rethink keeping the item. I have come to realize that there is a fine line between an item that has sentimental value and an item that you are keeping out of guilt because it was a gift. I was holding on to a lot of things that were no longer of use to me only because I had received them as a present. The best way to get rid of something like that is to think of how someone else might discover it for the first time and enjoy it instead of it just taking up space in your cupboard.

Currently, I am reworking my bedroom closet. I managed to get rid of seven small bags of charity bin clothes from both Byron and I’s wardrobes. I ended up selling some really cute dresses that I had but didn’t wear anymore to friends on Facebook. Now I am perfecting my organizing style with bins, velvet hangers and closet organizers. Saving space is super crucial and everything you do should maximize the room you do have especially when you are living in a smaller space like a condo or apartment.

The bottom line is that you’ll want to start now, like I did, so that once summertime rolls around you won’t have to worry about digging through your closets for that dress or bag – you will have it at your fingertips in no time. The summer months should be spent enjoying the warm weather and taking advantage of your great wardrobe! Plus, the more room you make now – the more cute stuff you can pick up to replenish your wardrobe. :)

Can’t Wait To Meet You Neighbour, Target!

biker

Like any self-respecting shopaholic, I am counting down the days until Target opens in Calgary. Yes, Target – the beautiful and wonderful red&white department store that fashionistas and interior decor lovers alike flock to any chance they get while in the US of A, has arrived within our scenic Canadian borders. The first three pilot stores just opened today in Ontario and I am already so jealous of those lucky shoppers. I’ve been hearing rumours that the store closet to me, Chinook Centre will open later this month or early April. You will honestly see me in there on the very first day. Call me a consumerist but I love me a good deal and handful of beautiful products.

Here are some of the great products and brands we can expect to see in our soon-to-be-opened stores.

And with that, I will leave you with this darling video Target released during the Oscars last week featuring Canadian favourites, Dragonette singing a sweet song about being neighbours.

Organizing Your Crafting Space

This post is brought to you by Jewellery Maker. Everything you need to make your own jewellery.

Image

As an avid crafter and self-proclaimed DIY gal-around-town, my hugest obstacle to getting stuff done is staying organized. When you have feathers, crepe paper, foam core and paints always at the ready, it is really hard to find them a permanent home. And you’d think with the daily reminders from my husband to clean up the crafting supplies all over the living room floor (that I was totally too lazy to pick up after shooting a DIY for the blog) that I would have a grasp at how to make this work.

Well, I am getting there. I am learning. I have been working from home now for about eight months and I need to remember that our entire condo is not our office. I have a dedicated space and I need to stick to it – for the sake of our belongings, our design aesthetic and probably for the sake of my marriage! Like most other married crafters I know, their husband doesn’t appreciate leaving the house with random glitter in his hair or on his face. Haha! So, keeping organized in a dedicated small space is tricky but it also makes you reevaluate your furniture choices and what supplies you absolutely need to keep around. Like everything you need to make your own jewellery.

This past weekend I decided to move my replica tulip table out of the office and swap it with our larger kitchen table. The kitchen table is long and useful for photographing and working on bigger projects. I usually end up out in the kitchen to work on my DIYs so why waste good eating space with hot glue and glitter junk? Now, we have a smaller kitchen table but it actually opens up the space more and is more comfortable to sit at when it is just Byron and I. And now I have this lovely big table in my office that can hold my iMac, sewing machine, cutting mat and paper roll. I am loving it already.

One thing I definitely need more of is shelf space. I have four IKEA Billy bookcases and two small Expedits full of stuff and I am definitely taking a second look at what is on there. I have decided to pack up all of our paperbacks and novels for now. Not only are they taking up valuable supply space but they are really only there for sentimental value and also to make us look super smart. We aren’t going to be re-reading them anytime soon so into boxes and storage they go. I want to make back issues of my favourite magazines more readily available as well as art and photography books that I can grab for daily inspiration. The empty shelves I want to utilize with bins and boxes to organize the supplies I want on hand.

How do I organize within the boxes? Simple, I use my favourite organizational tool out there – ZIPLOC BAGS! These are especially great for loose crafting supplies like beads, paper scraps and past projects. I also like to keep similar tools and supplies in them. I just bagged up all of my glue into one bag so it is at the ready anytime I need them for a crafting event or big project. Seriously, you will thank me for this one.

All in all, the key to staying organized in a somewhat chaotic place is to determine how you work as a crafter and how to compliment your process in the best way possible. You might need to change around your furniture or invest in some new pieces but when you get the formula right, you will be so much more productive and creative than you have ever been!

Pantone is everywhere now – including your Christmas Tree. Holt Renfrew is carrying these shiny and colourful Pantone ball ornaments (03.) this year and are the perfect gift for anyone who works in art and design. Plus, you can choose your favourite colours!

Roots has been carrying more and more unique items and their holiday collection is an excellent example of fabulous gift ideas. This 2013 Wood Stump Calendar (04.) is absolutely inspired. Simple and natural paired with beautifully illustrated calendar cards – this gift keeps on giving each month.

Nothing better than a mug, is there? This big cream and gold mug (05.) from Starbucks will keep your beverages hot while you watch It’s A Wonderful Life for the 20th time! Delicate design details make this a great gift for anyone who enjoys hot chocolate or a great coffee.
